How to Create a Cozy Home While Staying Minimal

I think I was one of the first people who boarded the minimalist train.

When I was a kid I remember every Sunday going to yard sales and then walking through all of the model homes in my area. I’ve been in love with homes ever since I can remember.

Now I haven’t necessarily been in love with the decor of the home rather than the feeling. While I do love the minimalistic style, I refuse to throw things away that, let’s be honest, I know I could live without, but I simply don’t want to.

Collecting items over the past year for my first home has been so fun. From the occasional investment pieces, to the thrift shop where I find the most beautiful treasures. The best homes I’ve even been to were the ones with the custom furniture, expensive throws, or one of a kind light fixtures. No, they were simply the ones that were so warm and cozy that as soon as you entered, you knew you wouldn’t want to leave.

SAVE MONEY:

When you have the minimalist approach you end up buying less which means a little extra cash in your pocket.

LESS TIME CLEANING:

With less clutter there are fewer things to dust and wipe down. Trinkets and knickknacks are still some of my favorite but knowing when too much is too much has saved me so much time in the cleaning department.

MORE HAPPINESS:

When you have fewer things you are able to love and appreciate the things that you do have. I notice that since I don’t spent a ton of money buying everything I like that when i do decide to buy something it’s because i really love it.

How to create a cozy home ?

1. Add texture. We all have seen a blanket that makes you want to cozy up by a fire and roast marshmallows all night. Yep, that’s the kind of blanket that makes your home warm and welcoming. I love keeping a few throw blankets in my living room so that way when we have guest it is easy access for anyone who would like one.

2. Scent. Candles and diffusers are such an easy way to set the ambiance of your home. I seriously think that even if my house was a mess, as long as it smelt good it felt clean to me.

3. Lighting. Ahhhhh the cozy light given from a lamp. I love lamps. Especially toward the ends of the day when the sun is nearly setting. Rather than having bright overhead lights shining down on you, you can simply turn on your lamp for a warm yellow light that brightens up the corners of your house perfectly.

Your home should reflect you and your family.

My home is going to look a lot different thAn yours because I love different things and I strive for different feelings. If you love sitting and reading at night, get a cozy chair and side table. Do you love doing arts and crafts with your babies ? Then have a nook set up specifically for that. Does your husband always track in his muddy boots after work ? Set up your mud room with a bench or shoe rack for him. When you decorate your home don’t worry about trends, or what other people may thing, or who will even like it. A home is precious and you spend so much time there. It should be something that is realistic, magical, and obtainable. A cozy minimal home is the perfect combination in my opinion. I keep it decluttered and clean but without sacrificing all of my favorite things.
