Hey future designer! Here is your guide to beginning your design career. Do you have a love for the art of clothing and eye for style? Ready to make your ideas come to life? Read through these steps to get started on creating your line today! This post is all about creating a line and becoming a fashion designer in 5 simple steps.

1. Finalize Audience and Brand Name

Pick 3 names you like for your brand and audience. When thinking of a name, think of your audience. What words describe your audience? Your clothing? The vibe you are going for?
Send them to every family member or friend you trust and ask them to order them best to worst. With this small research, you can save time choosing a name. Sometimes we go back and forth and are so indecisive on such small yet paramount details! Have the people you trust help you out! Or do a poll on Instagram or Facebook!
Send that name to a logo designer on Fivrr. Fivrr is an app that connects you to freelancers of all types of work. Getting a logo can be as cheap as 5 dollars. Make sure to shop around, check reviews, and see how many revisions come in the package you buy. Personally, I always like to splurge for unlimited revisions to make sure I get every detail right.
2.Sketch Your Garments

Being a pro sketch artist is not necessary. Your sketch just needs to be clear enough to get your ideas across. Use a pen and paper or use an app! I love Procreate. It is a one time purchase with SO MUCH amazing tools.
You will never spend hundreds again on the best pens, colors, and pencils for sketches. This comes with every type of pen and color imaginable. I use this app for mood boards, playing with color combinations, fashion sketches, and making custom patterns to get printed on fabric. This app is a designer MUST HAVE. I also love posting the 30 second time-lapse of my drawing onto social media.
3. Buy Tech Pack on Fivrr

After you have finalized your sketches, go back on Fivrr and shop for a tech pack creator. A tech pack is a professional file consisting of garment specifics like measurements, color, details like buttons/darts/etc, and quantity.
Honestly, hiring for this part is worth every penny and you get what you pay for. So take the time to see what different freelancers offer in their packages and take a moment to look at work they have done before.
4.Send Tech Packs to Manufacturers

Manufacturers usually require you to send them tech packs to be able to give you a quote which is why step 3 is crucial.
Picking a manufacturer can be a time consuming process. You need to choose whether you want it made in the US or China! Making in the US is more expensive but gives your brand lots of credibility being made here since you are employing people here and not giving your money to poorly regulated sweatshops.
Send it out to 5-10 manufacturers and ask for quotes! Usually sample pricing is included in quotes.
5. After Samples, Choose Best Manufacturer

Have 3-5 manufacturers make you a sample!
From how long it took, customer service, and quality of the garment, you can finalize which manufacturer is best suited for your work. You will usually have to sign a few documents, get matched with a project manager and the ball will get rolling.
Soon, you will have your entire line done and ready for marketing, photoshoots, and to be sold!

I hope you learned from this information and are ready to take these steps! This is your sign to go for it and create your line! Message us with any questions you have and make sure to follow our Instagram, Pinterest and Youtube for updates on new posts, tips and tricks.
